Paranormal Cozy Mystery Cover Trends 2025

Paranormal Cozy Mystery Cover Trends

Following my report on Contemporary Cozy Mystery covers, here’s a look at current trends in the Paranormal genres. These trends span several Amazon categories, including:

  • Witch & Wizard Mysteries
  • Ghost Mysteries
  • Psychic Mysteries
  • Vampire Mysteries
  • Women’s Fantasy Fiction (home to most midlife-themed books, although this category often blends into fantasy and romance)

A couple of offshoots worth noting: Paranormal Witches & Wizards Romance, which leans more romantic, and Cozy Fantasy, with its magical worldbuilding. Both overlap with Paranormal Cozy to some extent, but they also have distinct traits — enough to warrant a separate deep dive.

This is what I currently observe – please note that trends change and cycle around – often an older trend can make a comeback, or a new trend can be imported from another genre.

Eight Trending Cover Styles

  1. Small Symbols and Decorative Designs
Currently dominating across the board — subtle, elegant, and everywhere.
  2. Cats
A long-standing favorite that continues to  maintain a strong presence, along with colorful backgrounds, glows and sparkles. I only really saw one dog cover and that was from the popular series by Sherry A. Burton.
  3. Witches and Female Figures
Witches appear most often in the Witch & Wizard category, while darker, moodier female figures are more common in Ghost Mysteries. This trend is still popular and I do see new series with female witches appearing.
  4. Objects on Plain Backgrounds
Clean layouts with one or two strong visual anchors.  There are not that many of these types of covers, but a few very popular series have had great success with these.
  5. Witch Silhouettes
A recognizable trend, largely driven by three or so prolific authors who’ve built entire brands around this style.
  6. Buildings and Landscapes (Exteriors)
Mostly found in Ghost Mysteries, often overlapping with more traditional mystery genres.
  7. Shiny Midlife Objects
These tend to feature prominently on books with a midlife heroine — a glowing purse, a sparkling necklace, or other magical items with flair.
  8. Minimalist Abstract Designs
Inspired by the Richard Osman aesthetic — sparse, clean, and increasingly visible.  This is mainly a non-paranormal trend but a few of these are showing up especially in Ghost Mysteries.
