Cozy Mystery Cover Trends 2025

Current Cover Trends in Contemporary Cozy Mysteries (Non-Paranormal)

Seasoned authors know that book sales online depend heavily on readers being able to instantly recognize a book’s genre—often within just a few seconds as they scroll through Amazon or other online retailers. A cover that clearly signals its genre while still standing out as unique to your own series is essential.

That’s why, when designing covers, I regularly browse current bestsellers and new releases to keep an eye on what’s trending. Some cover styles remain popular for years, but their prominence can rise and fall in cycles—and every so often, a fresh trend emerges and reshapes the market.

For this article, I focused on the following Amazon categories:

  • Cozy Culinary Mysteries
  • Cozy Animal Mysteries
  • Amateur Sleuth Mysteries
  • Cozy Craft & Hobby Mysteries
  • Cozy Books, Bookstores & Libraries Mysteries

After reviewing a wide range of titles, here are the most popular cover styles I noticed—listed roughly in order of popularity:

1. Dogs

Yes, dogs are everywhere right now. Covers featuring mostly realistic-looking dogs are dominating the charts. Most are large and very visible on the cover.  Some are more stylised or vector art.

2. Places

Scenic locations are another strong trend. Whether it’s a charming café interior, a cozy bookshop, or a picturesque village street, settings are often rich with detail and play a central role in the cover’s storytelling.  These covers may sometimes feature a small cat or dog as part of the scene.

3. Abstract Objects & Minimalist Layouts

This trend really took off after Richard Osman’s breakout hits. Clean, type-forward designs with bold color blocks or symbolic objects (like teacups, keys, or footprints) are becoming more common. These can be found especially in the Amateur Sleuth Category.

4. People

Mainly women—usually the amateur sleuth—posed in front of a setting or sometimes against a plain or slightly stylized background. While not as dominant as dogs or places, they’re still very present.

5. Cats

Interestingly, cats seem to be less common right now in the non-paranormal space. They’re still around, but they tend to be popular in paranormal cozies rather than contemporary ones.
